S5

Cinema S5 - Probably the best home cinema surround speaker ever

To deliver a maximum realistic scenery, the S5 is not just a usual dipole speaker. The S5 is very unique and let you have three options for adjustment: Front firing, Dipole and Dipole 3X (Both Dipole and front firing sound mode) The lower frequencies are very important for an accurate dipole reproduction and thus the S5 is equipped with two broad-band drivers on the sides. These drivers can be operated in different ways to ensure you enjoy the perfect surround feeling, producing a perfect combination of accurate and spacious sound. The Dual-Tweeter array on the front can handle high sound pressure levels while consistently producing crystal clear, detailed sound. It is supported by a high-class mid-bass driver which ensures the highest accuracy. Lean back and enjoy the rich, dynamic and yet wide sound of this incomparable surround speaker.

Drivers
Drivers

As main drivers, the Cinema S5 uses a special dual-tweeter assembly which is supported by a powerful low-mid driver. The dual-tweeter arrangement ensures the speaker possesses ideal dispersion characteristics, a high maximum sound pressure level and thus even more detailed sound at normal levels than many other speaker designs. In addition, the Cinema S5 features broad band drivers of the highest quality on both sides, which can be used in different configurations (for example as dipole to the front drivers).

Sound Tuning
Sound Tuning

The S5 can either be used as a direct radiator, dipole speaker or dipole 3X. The already space-filling properties of dipole loudspeakers can be further improved by using the dipole 3X configuration. In this configuration, the broad band drivers both play as dipoles to the front drivers. The use of broad band drivers ensures the dipole effect also is present in the frequency range below 1KHz. The result of this arrangement is a uniquely broad expanse of surround sound.

Cabinet
Cabinet

The housing itself is a fully optimized special construction. The use of HDF and the trapezoidal shape provide improved stability and an optimal balance between the perfect size of internal volume and the smallest possible external dimensions. They also reduce internal resonances to an absolute minimum. The Cinema S5 has countersunk threads for wall mounting the S5 using the Flushmount Kit or alternatively attach the S5 using the supplied screw to the available matching Cinema stand.

Surface
Surface

For the surface of the Cinema S5 a special anti-reflection coating is used. This matte black anti-reflective polyurethane paint is thereby applied in 8 layers. Afterwards, an ornate polishing ensures a perfect and very appealing overall finish. Thus, disturbing light reflections on the surface of the speaker can be reduced to a minimum when using a projector.

Terminal
Terminal

The connectors on the rear panel of the Cinema S5 are executed gold-plated to minimize transmission resistance. The smooth-running and extremely stable screw terminals allow a secure fit to connect your speaker wire. The terminal serves simultaneously to select the three possible configuration modes as direct radiator, dipole speaker or dipole 3X.

Front Cover
Front Cover

The speaker grill of the Cinema S5 is magnetically attached. The black acoustic material is opaque but nevertheless completely transparent to sound. It protects the drivers, protecting them from potential damage. The magnetic logo can be mounted in several places on the cover or the speaker enclosure to provide maximum flexibility for the user and to enhance the speaker’s overall visual appeal.

Further Information

Dual-Tweeter Array

Edge dispersions are one cause for non-uniformities in the higher frequency range. These dispersions are avoided by the off-center positioning of the Dual-Tweeter array. The silk dome uses a very light material providing very high sensitivity while also possessing a "soft clipping" character to provide further headroom to manage distorted sound at extreme levels. The two 1" soft dome tweeters are arranged in a special way to ensure a perfectly balanced dispersion to envelop the listener with sound of the same timbre throughout the listening room. The tweeters work from 1.2 KHz and they control the dispersion in this very sensitive frequency range. This means no phase problems occur in the ear sensitive range 2-6 KHz as there is no crossover point here as in most speakers. The dual array provides many advantages as mentioned above: high power handling, high sensitivity and low distortion. The dual tweeters also help to control the sound so it is transmitted perfectly in both the tweeter range and the midrange. It gives an optimized vertical directivity to reduce floor and ceiling reflections and a controlled dispersion in the horizontal direction. Controlled directivity but still no “beaming” effect from the midrange is a big advantage in a multi-seat setup. The placement of the dual tweeter is not centered in order to improve the diffraction effect and the extra baffle improves it further. By taking advantage of placement and using the baffle step effect the energy is directed into the listening room, less on the sides and this reduces the early reflections from sidewalls.

Midrange Woofers

The midrange woofers used in M6, S5 and the S2 utilize cones comprised of a very strong, long fibre pulp blend of material treated with a specialized coating compound which offers maximum strength and rigidity while maintaining minimum mass. The optimized combination of cone angle, dust cap diameter and geometry provides a near perfect piston emulation, maximum cone area efficiency, and controlled high velocity characteristics in both the inward and outward directions. S5 This midrange woofer is a 4-inch driver produced in the same way as the M6 midrange’s woofers. On the sides are two 3-inch wideband drivers used to be able to choose between Dipole or Dipole 3X, a dipole in three directions dipole capability. The driver is adapted to be able to handle high power due to its strong magnet and aluminium shorting ring. The long fibre pulp cone also has a very high sensitivity with "soft clipping" characteristics which provides further headroom for undistorted sound at extreme levels. The low (1,2KHz) crossover point "hand-over" from the tweeter (on the M6 & S5) has several advantages.

Broadband

The broadband driver cone used in S5 consisting of a very strong long-fiber pulp mixture, that are being treated with a specialized coating for maximum strength and stiffness to weight ratio. The optimized combination of cone angle, dustcap diameter and geometry provides an almost perfect piston movement, maximum efficiency, cone area and controlled high-speed characteristics of both in- and out direction, this makes it able to reproduce most of the entire audible frequency range.

Crossover
Crossover

When we developed the M6 and S5, a great deal of effort was put into the crossover filter and this is actually the most important aspect of a speaker. All passive components are of the highest possible quality to minimize any influence on the signal. We use an optimal selection of air wound coils (with low internal resistance) and coils with steel cores (these accept a high level of magnetic saturation), MKP capacitors and low induction resistors. The steepness of the filter is of the 4th order. The filter has an unusually low crossover point between the tweeter and midrange woofer which has several advantages. The crossover point is far from the mid frequencies’ breakup point and because of this, it plays with less distortion and with an improved D’Appolito effect.

Room Tuning
Room Tuning

The S5 is very unique and let you have three optionsfor adjustment:

  • Frontfiring
  • Dipole
  • Dipole 3X (Both Dipole and front firing sound mode)

A normal dipole speaker gives a compromised spreading pattern in two directions and because the spreading occurs in combination with the placement of the drivers it causes phase canceling effects depending of the position of the listener. Dipole 3X give you 3 options and one option to get the highest fidelity on axis of the speaker. So in a "one seat" position you can get high quality sound from the surround and then it’s up to you and the placement of the speaker if you choose to use the Dipole 3X mode. In a multi-seat installation, we recommend Dipole 3X mode to provide the same timbre around the surround speaker independent of the listening position. This is a very unique feature with many options for the end-user/installer. S5 has separate left and right speakers to avoid mid-mounted tweeter problems arising from edge dispersion.

Flushmount Kit (optional)

Our speakers can be mounted to the wall by either a VESA 75 mount using the built in keyhole hangers or our flush mount kit for a sturdier mounting (or to mount horizontally). This consists of a plate that fits on the back of the speakers and a corresponding plate that goes on the wall. The two plates easily interlock and leave enough room (15 mm) for the wires to connect as the speaker hangs on the wall.

Cinema Floorstand (optional)

The stands guarantee a flexible and stable positioning of your home theatre speakers. They fit perfectly both aesthetically and mechanically with the Cinema series and provide you with an easy and stable installation. The stand also hides the speaker cables so there are no loose cables leading to the actual speaker. Included in the package is a stacking bracket to mount two speakers vertically to create a line source. Just as the speakers they are painted in a matte black finish to avoid any reflections. The rubber spikes that are pre-mounted use the standard M6 thread and can be switched to metal spikes. To further add stability and weight the stands can be filled with sand.
