M8 Tower

Cinema M8 Tower – A masterpiece of home cinema technology

The long and thorough development of the numerous unique technologies which are used in the Cinema M8 Tower have lead to an outstanding home cinema speaker with multiple advantages compared to common systems. To provide a neutral and thus harmonic sound to a broad audience with people sitting besides each other, the M8 Tower features 8 drivers in a special formation: The six tweeters are mounted in a hex tweeter array while the two 8"  woofer drivers form a D'Appolito arrangement. Both arrays make sure that all listeners benefit from the clean sound characteristics while it also enables the M8 Tower to reproduce even highest SPL with minimum distortions and therefore fill even large home cinemas of up to 120m² with its powerful sound.

Drivers

The treble and the most critical part of the midrange is reproduced by a specially developed hex tweeter array. This unique construction allows special design options like a very low crossover frequency to the woofers and thus provides a minimum phaseshift off axis, minimal distortion, high max. SPL capacity, optimized radiation response and high efficiency. The two 8" mid-bass drivers are designed in the D'Apppolito arrangement and in combination with the tweeter array achieve the best dispersion pattern for your home theater/hifi system. In combination the 8 drivers can provide very high sound pressure, even in large rooms.

Sound Tuning
Sound Tuning

In order to be able to adapt the M8 Tower perfectly to your requirements and the prevailing room acoustics, the treble can be configured. It can be adjusted to neutral (0dB), slightly increased (+ 2dB) or slightly lowered (-2dB) with the aid of the switch on the back. Furthermore, the bassreflex port can be closed with the attached plug to alter the bass characteristics of the M8 Tower. If the port is closed, the bass will be less powerful but even more precise while opening the port creates a punchy and deep bass response.

Cabinet
Cabinet

As cabinet material of the bassreflex construction, the M8 Tower uses HDF. Compared to MDF, this material is even more stiff, more stable and thus ensures the high weight of the loudspeaker. Internal resonances are effectively reduced thanks to the trapezoidal shape. The baffle of the M8 Tower is angled by 7.5° in the direction of the center of the room so that the loudspeakers can be easily aligned towards the listening area.

The high-quality multi-layer coating with a special 8-layer anti-reflection lacquer minimizes disturbing stray light when using a projector and thus enables you to place the speakers close to a TV or screen. It also gives the Cinema M8 Tower a refined and professional character. The elaborate polishing provides a unique homogeneous surface finish.

Terminal

The connections of the Cinema M8 Tower are designed for bi-wiring and bi-amping. The connectors are gold plated to minimize transfer resistances. The jumpers for the bi-wiring terminal include copper spades. The massive screw terminals allow a secure connection and an optimal connection for your cables.

Front Cover

The front cover of the Cinema M8 Tower has magnetic holders. The black acoustic cloth which is used is opaque and completely sound-transparent. It also protects the drivers effectively against possible damage. The magnetic logo can be attached to the cover or loudspeaker housing at several points.

Further Information

Multi-Tweeter-Midrange Array

The specially developed hex tweeter array is the heart of the M8 Tower construction and is responsible for the reproduction of the very important frequency range between 950 Hz and 30.000 Hz. The array is using 6 tweeters and creates a line array beam effect in both horizontal and vertical direction. Therefore it is possible to cover this large frequency range and achieve several large advantages. The Cinema M8 Tower is designed as a pure 3-way construction with one of the six tweeters playing from 2.500 Hz up to 30.000 Hz. The other five tweeters play from 950 Hz to 2.500 Hz. Due to the usage of 5 identical tweeters for the midrange, the M8 Tower is able to perform a very fast and dynamic impulse response with very linear phase and a pointsource character due to the usage of many small drivers over a wide frequency range.

Due to the hex array arrangement, the dispersion pattern is optimized to cover a typical home cinema room or hifi room with minimum of influence of the room. Within an angle of +/- 30° the frequency response is nearly completely equally neutral. Beside that angle which is covering the usual amount of listeners in a home cinema, the beameffect of the speaker ensures a minimum of early reflections on walls and the floor / ceiling. In practise, this leads to a very detailed and precise sound with high dynamics and a very clean voice reproduction even in acoustically unoptimized rooms. Another advantage with 6 tweeters is the extremely low distortion which is achieved by using many high quality tweeters in an array and in combination with the correct crossover design.  The power is splitted to 6 units and therefore each individual tweeter plays with a very low distortion.

The Cinema M8 Tower can reproduce extremely high SPL without ever starting to sound unclean. High maximum SPL ensures extraordinary dynamic capabilities. The tweeters themselves consist of japanese silk which is strengthened by a polymer coating. Its magnet system features a strong neodymium magnet and copper shorting rings to provide a perfect magnetic field. The 9mm thick front baffle is made out of Aluminium and responsible for the heat dissipation.

Woofer Driver

The two 8" woofer drivers which are used in the Cinema M8 Tower consist of a unique long fibre pulp blend with a polymer coating to even increase their stiffness. This material mix and design ensures maximum strength and rigidity while its weight is very low. The well designed papercone provides a very good balance between weight, stiffness and damping and is able to reproduce very high SPL levels with very low distortion. The aluminum basket provides a high stability for the whole construction. Thus, the membrane is able to reproduce impulses with highest precision. With an optimized cone angle, dust cap diameter and geometry, the movement of the woofer drivers behaves nearly perfectly like a piston.

The drivers are arranged in a D'Appolito formation to further improve the dispersion pattern and reduce undesirable reflections from the floor and ceiling. Furthermore, the efficiency is increased while the distortions are minimized by this formation. Due to the very strong magnet system, the drivers can handle highest power and dynamics which makes them the optimium choice for high-end home cinema installations. The crossover frequency to the tweeters is chosen at a very low and optimum 950 Hz which offers a minimum of phaseshift off axis as well as an even and controlled dispersion. The low crossover point also is very far from the breakup point of the woofer which leads to an optimized bass performance and a very clean midrange with minimum distortion.

Crossover
Crossover

Six tweeters combined with two 8" woofers provide a very good base to create a crossover that will enable the drivers to play with their best quality. During the development of the Cinema M8 Tower the crossover was tuned in a very careful way to optimize the sound characteristics for a perfect home cinema experience. The goal of the development was to achieve high efficiency, high powerhandling, a controlled dispersion and low distortion. With many conventional speaker designs, this would not have been possible without to enlarge the cabinet size significantly. All components on the crossover are of very high quality to ensure an optimum signal transmission and longest lifetime. There are air wound coils with low internal resistance and steel core coils for a high level of magnetic saturation, MKP capacitors and low induction resistors. The steepness of the filter for the woofer driver is 4th order (24 dB), the midrange tweeters have a 3rd (18 dB) order low-pass and 3rd order high-pass filter while the steepness of the lowpass for the high frequency tweeter is also 3rd order. The crossover point from the woofer to the tweeters is low and far from the mid frequency breakup point and the tweeters have a high frequency crossover point. Due to this technology, the M8 Tower plays high levels with low distortion and very clean neutral sound.

Sound Tuning

The Cinema M8 Tower provides a switch on the backside to adjust the tweeter level to the prevailing room acoustics and the personal taste. It is possible to either decrease the tweeter level slightly (- 2dB), set the tweeter level to neutral (0 dB) or slightly increase the tweeter level (+ 2 dB). The first option is a very good choice in rooms with a longer reverberation while the last option might fit strongly dampened home cinemas. The neutral option is in any case the setting with which the speaker reproduces the source material with highest fidelity. Furthermore, it is possible to adjust the bass level by using the attached plug to close the bassreflex port which makes the M8 Tower behave like a closed box construction with maximum precision or leave the bassreflex port open to achieve a maximum powerful bass.
