99.36 FLR

99.36 FLR - Excellence in sound and design

The 99.36 FLR is the third generation of the famous 99-Series from XTZ. All of its predecessors have gained great reputations due to the outstanding value they represent in this price range given the incomparable quality of the drivers which are used. The Fountek Tweeter is one of the best available on the market and the mid-bass and bass drivers originate from the Norwegian manufacturers SEAS. These drivers, combined with the excellent finish of the cabinet and the multiple sound tuning capabilities offered (using the supplied plugs for the bass reflex tubes and the jumpers on the back), make the 99.36 FLR an absolutely unique speaker.

Drivers

The Fountek ribbon tweeter of the 99.36 MK3 is already an indication of how well this speaker reproduces sound. It provides detail and precision in abundance. Contrary to many other ribbon tweeters, the Fountek plays accurately and smoothly at the same time. The frequency range below is covered by an outstanding SEAS Excel driver, which produces every impulse with maximum accuracy. In the bass frequencies, another SEAS driver supports the mid-bass driver to achieve deep, powerful and very precise bass reproduction.

Sound Tuning

The natural sound of the 99.36 MK3 can be adjusted perfectly to your needs with the help of numerous options. On the back of the speaker, you can adjust the bass and treble levels with the supplied jumpers. These options enable you to tune the speaker according to your room’s sound characteristics and your own taste. Another possibility to further tune the sound is provided by the enclosed bass reflex plugs. These plugs can be used to adjust the bass characteristics and even turn the 99.36 into a sealed box, which leads to even more precision.

Cabinet
Cabinet

Weighing 25.5 kg, the 99.36 is not a lightweight speaker despite its graceful appearance. Besides the strong magnets of the drivers, the multiple internal bracing inside the cabinet is responsible for the extremely stable cabinet. Its exterior walls are made from 25mm thick MDF which minimises resonances. These resonances are further reduced, by the generously applied internal damping material. The perfect ratio of the housing’s volume to the drivers ensures the XTZ 99.36 achieves extremely high precision.

Surface
Surface

The speaker is available with multilayer lacquer coatings, either matt white or gloss black; in either finish, the 99.36 is a beautiful speaker. Both variants are finished using an elaborate process to achieve their distinguished appearance. Slightly rounded edges provide an absolutely timeless and elegant design. The supplied trusses are made from solid aluminum and contribute to the fine overall impression.

Speaker Terminals
Speaker Terminals

Gold tri-wiring ports adorn the connection terminals of the 99.36 to enable you to connect the speaker in tri-amping mode. The screw terminals ensure an easy to use, but solid connection for your bare cable, or your 4mm banana plug connections, in order to obtain the best signal transmission. Furthermore, the terminal offers numerous ways to customize the sound of the speaker by using the supplied jumpers.

Front Grille
Front Grille

Six magnets are responsible for keeping the front grille in its place. As the magnets are covered with rubber, the there is no possibility of damaging the finish. Another advantage of the magnetic cover is its automatic positioning. The black cloth used is acoustically transparent, yet at the same time opaque. It effectively protects the drivers from possible damage while maintaining the speaker’s beautiful look.

Further Information

Ribbon Tweeter
Ribbon Tweeter

The 99 Series Ribbon Tweeter delivers a superior transient and flat response thanks to the super thin ribbon cone, which is only 18 microns thick, with a powerful neodymium magnet. The magnet system is a 2 row, high efficiency neodymium magnet, in a moulded chassis of ceramic carbon steel. Fish-bone shaped contactors in aluminum result in a low resistance connection and good heat dissipation. The front plate is made from CNC machined aluminum to make sure the tweeter is fixed to the front cabinet as firmly as possible. The driver has high power durability and handles frequencies up to 40000 Hz.

Midrange / Woofer Driver
Midrange / Woofer Driver

The Tweeter is a perfect match with the 6.5" Midbass driver from SEAS. SEAS is the only company in the world to offer high purity, die-cast and machined magnesium cones. The SEAS Excel magnesium cone drivers are world-renowned for their high definition, low distortion and accurate sound reproduction. The surface treated magnesium cone is extremely light but at the same time extremely stiff and it effectively reduces resonances. Each cone is individually machined from a solid piece of magnesium for maximum precision. The rubber surround makes sure that no edge resonances occur. The injection moulded metal basket is a “high flow” type that is acoustically transparent both above and below the spider. The basket is shaped with high precision as a result of the moulding process. The basket is absolutely non-magnetic, which contributes to the higher efficiency of the driver. The strong magnet combined with the light cone ensures high efficiency and a good transient response. Heavy copper rings mounted above and below the T-shaped pole piece reduce nonlinear and modulation distortion and increases the overload margin.

The Bass driver is from the Seas Prestige series, featuring a coated paper cone, a well-tried material with an unbeatable price/performance ratio.  The construction is very stable with a powerful magnet paired with a light paper cone to achieve a great transient response.  The rubber surround makes sure that no edge resonances occur. The molded metal basket is of the “high flow” type. It is acoustically transparent and highly precise because the basket is shaped perfectly during the injection moulding process. This ensures that the basket is very stable and that it efficiently reduces resonances. The basket is absolutely non-magnetic, contributing to the higher efficiency of the driver. The strong magnet combined with the light cone results in a highly efficient driver with good transient response. Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduce sound reflection, air flow noise and cavity resonances. The 99.36 FLR Bass Driver sits in a separate chamber. This way, we have been able to optimize the chamber volumes perfectly for the Midbass and Bass drivers without any interactions between the two.

Crossover
Crossover

Designing and Tuning a Crossover when incorporating a Ribbon Tweeter is an Engineering challenge, as they react differently to dome tweeters, but here at XTZ, we have designed a Crossover that maximizes the capability of all 3 drivers in perfect unison.
For the Midbass and Tweeter, we have chosen a -12/18 dB slope crossover, that has a fast transient response with a minimum amount of phase shift. The crossover is built with massive air cooled Inductors, high tolerance, superb quality MKP capacitors and MOX resistors. The 99.36 FLR uses a 2.5-way technology, with a Seas Excel MidBass Driver, reproducing the mid to lower frequencies and a Seas Prestige Bass Driver managing the lower Bass range up to 180 Hz. We’ve implemented a challenging crossover topology to achieve a perfect compromise in efficiency, bass extension and impedance load. XTZ took quite an unconventional approach with the 99.36 FLR and it took a long time to develop and refine the technologies to achieve the goals, but in the end it turned out to be as near to a perfect solution as possible. The connectors are of a tri-wiring type so that you can connect a separate cable/amplifier for each driver to further improve the sound.

Sound Tuning
Sound Tuning

No speaker sounds the same in every room and everybody has different tastes in sound. This is why the XTZ 99 Series comes with room tuning options to adapt the sound character of the speaker so it best suits your needs. The 99.36 FLR has one upper port for the Midbass Driver and two ports further down for the Bass Driver. By using the supplied bass reflex plug(s), it is possible to mechanically alter the lower frequency boundary. As well, the crossover allows further adjustment. The terminal is equipped with jumpers to alter the tweeter’s characteristics, with four settings available: 0dB, +3dB, -2dB, and -4dB. Likewise, the bass is also adjustable with four possible settings: 0dB, +3dB, +6dB, and -3dB. The bass reflex ports, in combination with the adjustment options possible using the jumpers, result in a speaker that is customizable to even the most challenging of sound environments.
